Moving to an even higher resolution realm, the Sony Alpha a7R IV continues the noteworthy series of highly capable full-frame cameras, characterized by impressive stills and video performance and versatility. This fourth edition of the a7R sees the inclusion of an updated 61MP Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor and enhanced BIONZ X image processor, which afford impressive imaging results with marked smoothness, a 15-stop dynamic range, and, of course, speed. Up to 10 fps shooting is possible along with the ability to record UHD 4K30 video, both with support for Real-time Eye AF and Tracking AF technologies. The revised sensor design uses a Fast Hybrid AF System, with 567 phase-detection autofocus points, for notably fast and accurate focusing performance. Despite being such a high-resolution sensor, it is also distinguished by its flexible native sensitivity range from ISO 100-32000 for working in a variety of lighting conditions. Additionally, benefitting both stills and video operation, the a7R IV retains the 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE sensor-shift image stabilization, which is effective to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 5.5 stops.

Balancing the imaging merits, the a7R IV also sees an updated physical design with more robust weather sealing to suit working in especially harsh weather conditions. In terms of usability, the OLED electronic viewfinder has been boosted to an impressive 5.76m-dot resolution for clear viewing and the 3.0" rear tilting touchscreen LCD has a high 1.44m-dot resolution for crisp playback, live view shooting, and menu navigation. Dual SD card slots are both UHS-II-rated for faster performance and the inclusion of a USB Type-C port permits tethering and quick in-camera battery charging. Additionally, built-in Bluetooth and both 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands afford wireless transferring and remote camera control from linked mobile devices.

Dedicated Accessories from Sony

Complementing the camera body is a trio of accessories to increase battery life and enhance audio recording capabilities when shooting video. The VG-C4EM Vertical Grip is the dedicated battery grip, which accepts up to two more NP-FZ100 batteries for extended shooting times. Its ergonomic design also enhances handling when shooting in the vertical orientation.

For improved audio recording, and making use of the a7R IV's updated Multi Interface Shoe and digital audio interface, there is the
ECM-B1M Shotgun Microphone, which delivers a digital audio stream directly to the camera for cleaner quality with low noise. For even more advanced audio control, there is also the XLR-K3M XLR Adapter Kit, which is a dual-channel digital XLR audio adapter for connecting external microphones to the camera while still benefitting from the digital audio interface.

61MP Exmor R BSI CMOS Sensor and BIONZ X Image Processor

Featuring a back-illuminated design, the full-frame 61MP Exmor R CMOS sensor works with the BIONZ X image processor to offer impressively high-resolution stills and video while minimizing noise, improving speed, and achieving a wide 15-stop dynamic range. This sensor structure works with gapless on-chip lens design and an anti-reflection coating, as well as eliminating the optical low-pass filter, to improve light collection and enhance detail. Also, the copper wiring layer dramatically improves data transmission speed for creating 14-bit, high-resolution 61MP stills with a native sensitivity range from ISO 100-32000, which can be further expanded to ISO 50-102400. Also, it enables internal UHD 4K video recording with a wide 14-stop dynamic range using either the full width of the full-frame sensor or an APS-C-sized area. The BIONZ X processor also works in conjunction with a high-speed front-end LSI to realize faster processing times along with the ability to capture this impressive 15-stop dynamic range with smooth tonal rendering.

The sensor and processor combination also avails fast continuous shooting at up to 10 fps at full resolution, for up to 68 consecutive frames, with full-time AF/AE.

Fast Hybrid AF System

An updated Fast Hybrid AF system now employs a combination of 567 phase-detection points, which cover approximately 99.7% of the height and 74% of the width of the frame, along with 425 contrast-detection areas for reliable and quick autofocus and subject tracking performance. This focusing system also achieves especially quick speed and reliable tracking, as well as enhanced low-light focusing response down to -3 EV. The use of phase-detection points also enables the use of A-mount lenses via the optional LA-EA3 or LA-EA1 lens mount adapters with full continuous AF/AE tracking compatibility.

The apt focus system also lends itself to a variety of focusing functions for refined accuracy, including Lock-on AF, which maintains focus on moving subjects throughout the use of a configurable frame that is set over the desired moving subject, and Expand Flexible Spot, which employs neighboring focus points to retain focus on moving subjects even if the originally selected point loses focus. Additionally, Eye AF can be used to base focus on recognized human subjects' eyes for portraits and is available in both AF-S and AF-C modes, for both stills and video. Eye AF can be used when photographing animal subjects, too, with any focusing mode when shooting stills. Autofocus can also be used in conjunction with the Focus Magnifier function for critical focus when homing in on minute subject details. The rear touchscreen can also be used for Touch Focus control, and a Touchpad Focus Control mode lets you use the rear screen intuitively while keeping your eye to the viewfinder.

Body Design and Built-In Wi-Fi/Bluetooth

5-Axis SteadyShot INSIDE Image Stabilization

Packed into the robust a7R IV is a 5.5-stop effective 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilization system that compensates for five different types of camera shake encountered during handheld shooting of stills and video. This allows users to confidently use any lens, even adapted lenses, for critical imaging without encountering blur from camera shake.

For long focal lengths, the system will correct for pitch and yaw adjustments. Macro and high-magnification imagery, on the other hand, will benefit from the inclusion of horizontal and vertical shift compensation. All shooting styles will get usage out of the roll compensation. All 5 axes of stabilization will function at all times, even when used with third-party lenses and adapters or lenses with built-in optical stabilization.

Pixel Shift Multi Shooting

This unique compositing mode allows you to achieve even greater resolution than the 61MP sensor affords. Working in conjunction with the sensor-shift image stabilization, this mode shifts the sensor while making 16 consecutive exposures in order to acquire approximately 240.8MP of information for greater color accuracy and detail than possible with a single exposure, along with an impressive image size of 19,008 x 12,672-pixels. These files can then be merged together during post-production by using the Sony Imaging software suite.

UHD 4K Video Recording in XAVC S Format

Internal recording of UHD 4K movies is possible in multiple frame rates up to 30 fps and, based on the Super35mm recording area and effective 6K resolution, oversampling renders greater detail and full pixel readout is possible, that is void of pixel binning, for higher quality imagery with reduced moiré and aliasing. Full-frame 4K recording has also been dramatically improved for improved quality when working at mid to high sensitivities to permit full use of the entire sensor width. Full HD 1080p recording is also supported in frame rates up to 120 fps, and both resolutions utilize the 100 Mbps XAVC S format contained within an MP4 wrapper with 4:2:0 sampling. The high-speed, 120 fps recording also enables 4x and 5x slow-motion movie recording with the frame rate set to either 30p or 24p. In addition to high-resolution internal recording, uncompressed HDMI output also enables the use of an optional external recorder for clean 4K recording with 4:2:2 sampling.

4K video recording also avails the ability to produce 8MP stills during playback by taking a frame grab from a movie and storing it as a separate file.

a7R IV 35 mm full-frame camera with 61.0 MP

Reaching the peak of resolution: 61.0 MP2 full-frame CMOS sensor

Sony's newly developed 35 mm full-frame back-illuminated CMOS sensor with 61.0 megapixels2 enables the full-frame mirrorless α7R IV to attain expressive prowess once expected only in conventional medium-format cameras. Thanks to this mirrorless design, absence of mechanical mirror shock can maximize resolution without negative effect on image quality. The α7R IV realizes the level of image quality that surpasses the expectation for conventional full-frame cameras especially in the low- to mid-sensitivity range. Sony's proprietary technology achieves superb high resolution while assuring low noise and high sensitivity.

The enhanced image processing engine makes the most of the CMOS sensor

To match the excellence of the new image sensor, the high-speed BIONZ X image processing engine is also further enhanced to faithfully reproduce details and reduce noise significantly. Noise that tends to occur due to heightened pixel count is minimized for high image quality, especially in the standard ISO sensitivity range up to ISO 32000.3 Wide 15-stop dynamic range4 at low ISO sensitivity (for stills) delivers smoother reproduction of gradations from shadow to highlight. Moreover, the α7R IV's inherited color reproduction in still pictures - acclaimed in the latest α series - captures skin color in portraits and vivid color of flowers for natural α7R IV depiction.

Features maximizing superb 61.0 MP2 resolution

The α7R IV's extremely high image 61.0-megapixel resolution performance is maximized by other α7R IV advantages, one of which is 5-axis optical in-body image stabilization with optimized algorithms to achieve up to a 5.5-stop5 shutter speed advantage. Another outstanding feature is the electronic shutter allowing silent, vibration-free shooting. Additionally, the α7R IV incorporates an internal damper structure to absorb the impact of shutter motion for minimum shutter vibration. Many features in the α7R IV serve for realizing sharply resolved imaging.

14-bit RAW output for natural gradations

The α7R IV supports compressed and uncompressed 14-bit RAW output for smoother, more natural gradations that contribute to higher overall image quality. Taking advantage of even higher 16-bit processing in the imaging engine, front-end LSI and the enhanced BIONZ X image processor make 14-bit RAW6 output available even when shooting in silent or continuous mode7. 5.76-million-dot UXGA OLED Tru-Finder

Newly featured in the α7R IV, this 5.76-million-dot electronic viewfinder provides high-precision, high-brightness and high-contrast visibility, reproducing fine detail with 1.6 times higher resolution than α7R III. "High Display Quality" mode draws on the effective 61.0 MP (approx.) image sensor to suppress moiré and jaggies for highly precise and natural images on the viewfinder; 120/100fps8 of "High" finder frame rate mode shows smoother motion, so it's simpler to trace moving subjects. Fluorine coating makes it easier to remove dirt or a fingerprint from the lens, for more comfortable viewing in inclement weather and better concentration on shooting. Wide, fast, and steadfast AF evolution

Thanks to increased coverage and density of AF points and enhanced algorithm for tracking moving subjects, overall AF performance has evolved to provide steadfast, accurate tracking of complex subject motion and speed changes. The α7R IV's Fast Hybrid AF system combines high-speed, highly trackable phase-detection and high-precision contrast-detection autofocusing, even for shooting venues as dimly lit as EV-39. 567-point phase-detection AF and 425-point contrast-detection AF provide wider image area coverage10 of 99.7% height and 74.0% width. In addition, this remarkable AF system provides as rapid a response as α7R III, despite mass data handling due to the extremely high-resolution CMOS sensor, even in dim shooting venues.

Exceptional high-speed 10fps burst shooting with AF/AE tracking

Despite a high resolution of 61.0 MP2, an ingenious algorithm enables efficient processing for high-speed continuous shooting of up to 10fps11 with AF/AE tracking through a mechanical shutter. It is also possible to shoot continuously at up to 8fps in live-view mode, with minimal display time lag for capturing fast-moving subjects. After a full-frame image is cropped down to APS-C size or if APS-C shooting mode is chosen, you can still get 26.2 MP high-resolution images. This is a great advantage for wild animal photographers who rely on cropping after capturing images of quickly moving animals/birds from afar.

Up to 68 images in continuous shooting

Professional photographers need to achieve consistent shooting without interruption. With 1.5x greater buffer memory, system speed, and UHS-II support, the α7R IV can capture up to approx. 68 images12 in a continuous burst at 10fps1. With APS-C shooting mode, approximately three times more photos can be shot than with full-frame shooting mode. Fn menu/menu display access, setting changes, and review playback can occur during data writing. A countdown of the number of still images remaining to be written to memory is on display during playback.

Anti-flicker shooting13

Flicker from fluorescent and other artificial lighting is automatically detected and shutter action is timed to minimize the effect of flicker on still images. This suppresses exposure and color anomalies at the top and bottom of images shot at high shutter speeds, as well as exposure and color inconsistency between continuous shots, so you can take images indoors with more confidence.

Dual media slots, both supporting UHS-II

The α7R IV provides two media slots for SD cards, both SLOT 1 and SLOT 2 are now compatible with UHS-I and UHS-II for fast mass-volume data writing. Two cards in the slots can be used to simultaneously record or relay record data, separate RAW data from JPEG data, or stills from movies, and copy data from one card to the other. A slide lock structure prevents the memory card cover from being opened unintentionally.

Shooting for more professional lengths

The α7R IV employs the large-capacity NP-FZ100 battery just like α7R III. Due to a more energy-efficient circuit design, the α7R IV matches α7R III usage level longevity, despite the higher resolution of the α7R IV image sensor and EVF. An optional Vertical Grip (VG-C4EM) can hold two batteries and an optional Multi Battery Adaptor Kit (NPA-MQZ1K) can hold up to four batteries for even longer hours of shooting. In addition to using such optional accessories, USB Type-C and Multi/Micro USB ports allow external mobile batteries to power the camera for further extended recording.

Enhanced Real-time Eye AF (human eye) delivers more successful portraiture

Real-time Eye AF works in tandem with Real-time Tracking technology, based on the latest evolutionary advances in artificial intelligence, for highly efficient portrait shooting. This progressive system detects and processes face and eye data in real time, and stays locked onto the eye of the subject with unprecedented precision. When "Face/Eye Priority in AF" is ON, Eye AF (AF-C/AF-S/AF-A mode) can be activated not only through a custom key assignment, but also by half-pressing the shutter button or pressing the AF-ON button. This function now allows you to choose a particular eye - left or right, in advance or during shooting. Real-time Eye AF supports movie shooting in addition to stills.

Real-time Eye AF for Animals reliably tracks wild animals and pets14

Advanced AI-based subject recognition in Sony's Real-time Eye AF includes a new algorithm supporting animal tracking for fast, precise, automatic detection and tracking of an animal's eye. This new capability will greatly increase your success rate when shooting pictures of animals in the wild or beloved pets at home, situations where accurate focus has been a challenge.15 All AF-C, AF-S, and AF-A focus modes are supported.

Real-time Tracking holds the focus on tracked subjects

With this technology, accurate focus is maintained automatically while the shutter button is half-pressed. You can select a subject as you intend, rely on the α7R IV, and concentrate on your composition since the camera takes care of subject tracking. A newly adopted Real-time Tracking algorithm uses color, pattern (brightness), and subject distance (depth) data to process spatial information while AI technology detects a subject's face and eye in real time. Available for both stills and movies.

Focal-plane phase-detection AF supports A-mount lenses16

Phase-detection AF can operate even when an A-mount lens is attached to the α7R IV via an LA-EA3 Mount Adaptor. The 567-point focal-plane phase-detection AF system provides wide-area coverage, fast response, and high-performance tracking even if an A-mount lens is attached.

Wireless PC Remote function

Using the α7R IV alone, you can operate newly supported wireless PC Remote functions via Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz/5 GHz selectable17) to remotely control camera settings or send captured images to the camera while shooting. This cable-free setting allows maximum shooting freedom in indoor and outdoor shooting sessions. Moreover, the α7R IV also provides PC Remote functions via USB 3.2 Gen 1 compatible USB Type-C port, for image data transfer at time of tether-priority shooting. Even large-sized RAW images can be transferred smoothly and checked via PC immediately.

Versatile flash compatibility

The α7R IV has a sync terminal, so non-dedicated flash units and cables with standard sync terminals can be connected for convenient synchronization with studio flash units, etc. Release time lag when shooting with flash is minimized for smooth, responsive flash photography. Continuous flash shooting at up to 10fps offers advanced capture capability.18 To enhance versatility further, slow sync and rear curtain sync can be selected when shooting with wireless off-camera flash.19.

Pixel Shift Multi Shooting20 newly supports compositing a picture from 16 pixel-shifted images

A different dimension of resolution opens with Pixel Shift Multi Shooting. The α7R IV now supports image compositing from 16 pixel-shifted images in addition to previously available compositing from four images. Applying advanced image stabilization control, this renewed feature precisely shifts the sensor in half-pixel increments four times and in one-pixel increments four times alternately, to capture a total of 16 pixel-shifted images. These are composited by PC20 into one high-precision image of approx. 240.8 million pixels (19,008 x 12,672) from original data that holds the equivalent of approx. 963.2 million pixels to achieve overwhelming resolution in a single picture.21 Still images of architecture and art are captured in true-to-life detail, texture, color, mood, setting, and 3D-like realism, recreating hues with minimal moiré or color artifacts, and even reproducing atmosphere and surroundings with breathtaking fidelity for unprecedented accuracy in real-life imagination.

Reliable durability and weather resistance22 in tough situations

The α7R IV brings you further enhanced body durability, with full use of lightweight, high-rigidity magnesium alloy for covers and internal frame, keeping the camera highly rigid and light. In response to pro opinions, enhanced sealing is applied to the battery cover, terminal cover and all joints in the chassis. A double-sealed sliding mechanism replaces the hinge to the media compartment lid for better moisture resistance.22 Routes to dust and moisture entry have been re-examined, and a cushion around the lens mount has been added to ensure reliable operation in challenging environments.

Redesigned controls for confident and comfortable operation

A new multi-selector lets you shift point of focus quickly and intuitively to avoid missing moving subjects. The surface texture is changed to enhance button response for easier and more confident operation, in reply to pro users' requests. In addition, the AF-ON button is enlarged and optimized for easier access, with an adjusted click feeling and location. Furthermore, the new Exposure Compensation Dial Lock Button locks or unlocks alternately at each press and prevents accidental turning when set to lock position. These improvements enhance your concentration on shutter release to "capture the moment" instantly.
